Speakeasy Benches #13 & #14 Sheffield Wednesday FC supported by Speakeasy Club

Speakeasy Benches #13 & #14 Sheffield Wednesday FC supported by Speakeasy Club

Sport has the power to positively change and save lives. Penarth-based Speakeasy Club is on a mission to put FREE wellbeing & Mental Health resources in every community sports venue in the world.

The power of conversations and sporting communities has led its founder to create the Speakeasy Bench, in a bid to inspire people to take time out and talk more.

Simon Clarke, Founder of Speakeasy Club said: ‘’Sport has given me so much throughout my whole life; when I was struggling with my own mental illness, the rugby club clubhouse was my safe space and almost a refuge from reality. We must make these places as accessible as possible for their communities and show the next generations the power of talking with each other. That’s what we aim to do through Speakeasy Club and why I want to see pink benches across Wales and beyond.”

Simon aims to see a pink bench in every community sports club in the world. Each bench has two QR codes. When you scan one of the QR codes it’ll take you straight to the online clubhouse where you’ll be able to access free mental health support and resources that can support you or your teammates. The idea is that they do all the work by collating the fantastic help that is out there, so it saves people time and energy.

Simon added’’ If I’d have had access to these resources at the places I was going to regularly, maybe I wouldn’t have found myself on the edge of a cliff on Barry Island’’.

One key aspect of the work Speakeasy Club are doing is helping people to find their ‘’Clubhouse’’. The place where they feel safe, and free from judgement and a place where they feel like they belong.

Despite being born and bred in Penarth, Simon has been a Sheffield Wednesday fan for over 30 years, and his clubhouse is their home ground of Hillsborough Stadium.

Simon said ‘’ I’ve supported Wednesday some 1993 and haven’t been able to shake them. For over 30 years with my father, I’ve travelled up and done the M1 regularly to watch the matches.  During the darkest times of my depression and anxiety, watching Wednesday and wearing a hoody or a shirt was like my comfort blanket. It was the only thing that helped me at the time. Football is much more than just what happens on the pitch. ‘’

Speakeasy Club have partnered with the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme to deliver two benches – one at Jubilee Sports and Social Club and one at Hillsborough Stadium – and free mental health support to thousands of people.

Ben Winter, Deputy Head of Community says: ‘’ It’s a privilege to link with the Speakeasy Club initiative. Connecting SWFC with a charity that aims to provide vital support for people within our community. The benches donated to us are perfectly positioned to allow people to access the resources they might need, in a non-judgmental and private way. Supporting people’s mental health is extremely important to SWFC and this partnership will only improve our ability to do that.’’

Simon recently appeared on the popular Sheffield Wednesday fan’s favourite podcast The Wednesday Week, and spoke about the plans to support fellow fans by providing the benches.

Simon was joined on one of the pink benches outside Hillsborough stadium by regular podcast panellist and host, Stevie Spence

Stevie Spence, The Wednesday Week Podcast says: ‘’ I’m born and bred in the Sharrow area of Sheffield which is a predominantly (Sheffield) United area of the city. I started Supporting Wednesday with my sister back in the mid-1980s and haven’t looked back. The time I get to spend with my 10-year-old daughter each Saturday at the match means the world to me. Being part of the podcast is like having a second family at times and my clubhouse is very much that group of people and Hillsborough itself. Personally, and as a podcast, we’re delighted to support Speakeasy’s mission, and it aligns perfectly with the community work the podcast team has been doing recently. Wednesday is a huge part of thousands of people’s lives, so it’s exciting to provide more opportunities for likeminded people to look after each other’’

Having launched in Penarth, South Wales on World Mental Health Day in October 2023, there are currently 15 benches in place with over 400 QR codes scanned, with several more benches across the UK in the pipeline.

The aim to put a Speakeasy bench in every community sports club in the world is certainly a lofty one, but one Simon and the team at Speakeasy Club are committed to.

Clubhouse Conversations Live...

Title: Clubhouse Conversations Live
Guest Speakers: Shaun Edwards
Venue: Llanharan Rugby Club
Date: Sept 7th 2024

Blog/ News

Speakeasy Club is delighted to partner with Llanharan RFC and welcome Rugby’s dual code behemoth, Shaun Edwards to the Clubhouse on Saturday 7th September.

Over 14 years representing hometown team Wigan in Rugby League, with over 450 appearances and over 270 tries. Shaun has 37 winners medals whilst playing in the league, was voted man of Steel in 1990 and in 2015 was the 25th inductee in the Rugby League Hall of fame. Shaun also had stints with London Broncos twice, Balmain Tigers in Sydney and Bradford Bulls.

After 10 years at Wasps working with a certain Warren Gatland, Shaun joined the Welsh National set-up and over 12 years commanded incredible respect on and off the pitch. As well as a place on the 2009 British & Irish Lions tour as defence coach, there were 6 Six Nations Championships, 3 Grand Slams and 2 World Cup Semi-Finals (and plenty of great memories!).

Shaun joined the French National set up, winning another Grand Slam in 2022, becoming the only coach to win multiple Grand Slams with 2 different Nations in 6 Nations’ history.

Hosted by Speakeasy Club and supported by Llanharan RFC, Shaun will reminisce on some tales from his career on and off the pitch. This will be followed by a Q&A including a deep dive into his time with Wales, Wigan & the Lions (and who knows, maybe a special World Cup story?!) as well as questions from the audience.

We will also be raising money for charity on the night – LooseHeadz – auctioning a signed France jersey, personalised to the winning bidder.

Event details:
630pm – VIP Meet & Greet
730pm to 9pm – Evenings conversations with Shaun & Q&A
Llanharan RFC, 16 & Over only.
Theatre-style seating.

Throughout the evening, we will be raising money for Looseheadz charity: https://looseheadz.co.uk/pages/about-us

As part of our commitment to being inquisitive, learning about others and ourselves. We’re both passionate & proud of our #shareyourshirt campaign.

On the night of the 7th September, we will be encouraging you to wear your favourite rugby shirt. It can be for any reason whatsoever. We want to start conversations with like-minded people, and find out about why that shirt and that team. The aim is to encourage people to learn something they didn’t know before, promoting curiosity and openness.

There will be a free drink on the night for anyone wearing a classic Shaun Edwards Wigan shirt!

We really look forward to welcoming you to the Clubhouse on the 7th of September, so sign up through the above link to secure your place!

Trauma? I'm not dealing with any trauma. Am i?

Trauma? I'm not dealing with any trauma. Am i?

It’s National Anti Bullying week this week. Along with the stuff I’m currently talking about in therapy, it seems a very appropriate time to share a little story. Hopefully it can help other people but to be honest, it’s to help me as much as anything.

For years I’ve felt that if my son Reggie was ever in trouble for doing something wrong, no matter what it was, I would help him and be there to support him.

However, If he was being bullied or god forbid ever the bully, then I wouldn’t be able to go near the situation.

Someone else would have to get involved. The anger and fear building up inside me at the thought of needing to have that conversation with him is uncontrollable at times.

I mentioned this as an off the cuff comment in therapy not so long ago, I moved on. Very quickly my therapist intervened ” hang on a minute, tell me a bit more about that, why did you dismiss that feeling so quickly”.

Out of nowhere I said ” Now humour me here Charlotte, I doubt this has anything to do with anything, but i was quite badly bullied as a 12yr old in school, do you think that may have had any affect on me?”

”Ah” She said. ”Yes, yes I do. I think we may have found the root cause of the problems. Can you tell me a bit more about it?”.

There was this particular period halfway through year 8. A particularly lad, long story short, decided he was going to pick on me. There was never any physical bullying, but it was psychological. That was bad enough.

I was being left out of groups that I was normally involved in, isolated on the bus home from school and made to feel like in was the one doing wrong. I was being called names and left on my own. It’s f***ing awful.

One particular and very vivid time I remember being at football training one evening. I’d walked up to the car park waiting for a lift, when a good pal of mine Tom, came running up from the field and handed me my new Sheffield Wednesday jumper that I’d left behind.

The lad who was bullying me had been spitting all over it.

I know it’s just a jumper. But I loved that jumper. It meant so much to me at the time and I never wore it again after that.

I talked to Charlotte about how it felt like the bullying went on for a lifetime. In reality it was only a few weeks. That’s all it needed to be. The damage had very much been done.

My parents spoke to the lad’s mother and it was over. They were brilliant and I felt safe and supported by them the whole way. That’s all I wanted at the time. I didn’t want to interrogate things, understand why it had happened or even know what my parents had said. I just wanted it over. And it was.

With a knowing nod and (weirdly) a decent sized smile Charlotte said:

”So it turns out we’ve being doing a really good job at addressing the symptoms of why you’ve been feeling the way you’ve been feeling, however now I think we’ve found the root cause. ”

The reason you’ve felt insecure about relationships for the last 25 years, the reason you use food, money or alcohol to try and suppress any anxiety or emotion is all linked back to this time. It’s a trauma”.

”Everything you’ve been doing is an attempt to smooth over that void you’ve had. You may not have known that’s what it was, but that’s exactly it”.

I can’t tell you the weight that was lifted when I heard that. Everything changed. For the better.

I still feel anger towards bullying, but in a different way. Friends and colleagues have said it’s very obvious when someone appears to be showing bullying tendencies, how protective I get over others, and I’ll stand up to this people but in a constructive way. That feels good.

I want to help people with similar experiences. It’s easy to ignore them and act they they didn’t have an impact.

It requires us being vulnerable, open to critics again. but out doesn’t have to be. When you’ve been in a certain situation yourself, you know how others have felt. They may never have had the opportunity to feel seen or heard before.

I want to help others to feel supported, and to move on again.

This story has a happy ending. And I really do consider it the end.

Being bullied as child doesn’t have anywhere near as much power over me as it has done for the last 25 years. I’m aware of it now and what i was doing to fight it. By facing the trauma I’ve been able to learn about it, understand the emotions that I didn’t understand, and piece together it’s connection to those negative habits.

The power is still there. But I’m in charge now.

And I’m on the hunt find that jumper again…

Be more Bison....

Be more Bison.....

”Do you know the difference between Bison & Cow’s….?”

Both can tell when a storm is coming. Bison run towards the storm, embracing the challenge and, although tired, endure the storm for less time and enjoy the lush green grass on the other side in a shorter amount of time and with less pain.

Cows wait for the storm. Then, when it arrives, they panic and run with the storm. They stay in the rain longer, enduring much, much more. All of it needlessly.

This is similar to many complex challenges we face in our lives. Unfortunately, it’s easier to run away from the problem because we’re scared and don’t understand what ‘’the next bit’’ looks like.

However, if we #BemoreBison, we can tackle the challenge head-on, embrace the immediate but short-term pain and reap the benefits on the other side much quicker.

It’s hard and scary and terrifying and uncomfortable. But in this instance, the grass is much greener on the other side. Related to personal development, 70% of our Spekaeasy Survey respondents are interested in talking therapy or 1:1 coaching.

Many people are interested in developing themselves for the betterment of their families, friends and their well-being. We’re building resources in the background to support the Speakeasy community and upskilling ourselves simultaneously.

Week #1 of in the clubhouse.....

📚 @humor.seriously

Anyone–even you!–can learn how to harness the power of humour in business (and life), based on the popular class at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.

Working professionals have fallen off a humour cliff. In fact, around the time we enter the workforce, the number of times we laugh and smile on an average day statistically starts to plummet. I’ve always been fascinated by the benefits of humour in the workplace, and I must admit I’ve got it wrong at times.

But there’s a place for it, surely? it builds connections with people, creates enjoyable environments and increases productivity.

I’m interested to hear your thoughts…

🍷 @momentumwinesuk @bodegagarzon

If Uruguay has a signature wine, then Tannat is it. The French grape thrives in the coastal region of Maldanado. On the nose, there are intense aromas of plums and raspberries, with a hint of spice. It is a full-bodied wine, with ripe tannins complementing the juicy dark fruit and mineral notes. It is a striking and powerful wine. (notes from Momentum Wines).

I only last year tried Tannat for the first time, I was looking for something with a bit of punch and as ever, something a little different. this was SPOT ON. I love the story behind it and the fact it’s a little less well-known. I can’t imagine it’ll be kept quiet for long mind you. The team at Momentum Wines have a brilliant range of lesser-known gems from South America and the whole range from Bodega Garzon is quickly becoming a favourite.

Blackbird is not a story for the faint-hearted.

Jimmy Keene is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison but he cuts a deal with the FBI to befriend a suspected serial killer. Keene has to elicit a confession from Larry Hall to find the bodies of as many as eighteen women.

Gripping from start to finish, I may or may not have finished it within 2 days 🙂

🎧 @howtofailpod

I Boody love Elizabeth Day and don’t care who knows about it. Her conversation style is bordering perfection and always makes her guests feel super comfortable and as a result, they feel safe to talk about & reflect on many of their life failings.

Two of my favourite episodes involve two (very) different people from Australasia.

Bonus episode with All-Black Legend Dan Carter

Dan Carter; Yes an absolute great of the game but not without some very tough times. Dan talked brilliantly about his struggles with injury, the pressure and privilege of being an ABG (All Black Great) and how he relentlessly strove to be the best he can be on and off the pitch.

Also, if you haven’t yet checked out his book ‘‘The Art of winning’’, it’s well worth a read…

Domenica Calarco, Married at First Sight Australia.

Domenica Calarco is one of the most popular contestants of any MAFS series, and a huge advocate for wellbeing and doing the right thing. Domenica was paired with Jack and their relationship wasn’t without its troubles, but the resilience Dom showed in the face of being a young divorcee, being bullied by a fellow contestant and dealing with the fallout in the national press afterwards. Dom comes across as completely authentic, genuine and someone who holds themselves accountable for their actions.

Speakeasy Bench #4 - Dragons RFC Supporterd by Addis Housewares

Speakeasy Bench #4 - Dragons RFC Supported by Addis Housewares

RODNEY PARADE LATEST WORLD FAMOUS VENUE
TO BECOME HOME TO SPEAKEASY CLUB ‘PINK BENCH’

Last week it was Sheffield Wednesday’s world renowned Hillsborough and this week it is Dragons RFC’s famous Rodney Parade ground that has welcomed the latest Speakeasy Club ‘pink bench’ in the battle to open up conversations on mental health.

Long-standing Owls fan Simon Clarke, the founder of the Penarth-based Speakeasy Club, has been trekking around Wales and England linking up with sports clubs to try to spread the gospel about opening up to friends and family when times get tough.

Clarke’s mission is to put free wellbeing and mental health resources in every community sports venue in the world, with the Speakeasy Bench being the current delivery model.

Each bench is strategically placed to attract attention and its distinctive colour stimulates curiosity. Two unique QR codes on each bench then allow people to scan in straight to the online clubhouse where they are able to access free mental health support and resources to support themselves and their teammates.

Rodney Parade, one of the oldest sporting venues in Wales and home to both Dragons RFC and Newport County, is the latest venue to adopt a bench for the new season in similar fashion to Sheffield Wednesday, who took two last week.

Last month Clarke installed a bench at St David’s RFC in Pembrokeshire and a bowls club in Ebbw Vale. Since October last year there have been seven installations and there are several more in the pipeline.

On top of that, Speakeasy Club has partnered with Rugby Mental Health charity Looseheadz, and is going to work with all 274 registered rugby clubs in Wales to stress the power of conversations within sporting communities.

“I’m a big supporter of open, honest, and curious conversations on the training pitch as well as in the clubhouse,” explained Dragons head coach Dai Flanagan.“It was really interesting being part of the clubhouse conversation on the bench with representatives from across the Dragons and the different perspectives on what the club means to people were very powerful.“My local rugby club Penallta RFC means the world to me and my family, so I know first-hand how important it is to come together in a safe space with the common interest of rugby at heart. Long may it continue.”

Clarke founded Speakeasy Club to try to inspire people to take time out and talk more after he struggled with his own mental health andc one day found himself maybe on the edge of a cliff on Barry Island.

“Sport has given me so much throughout my whole life. When I was struggling with my own mental illness, the rugby club clubhouse was my safe space and almost a refuge from reality,” said Clarke.

“We must make these places as accessible as possible for their communities and show the next generations the power of talking to each other. That’s what we aim to do through Speakeasy Club and why I want to see pink benches across Wales and beyond.”

The latest bench will be installed at Rodney Parade ahead of the new BKT United Rugby Championship season. It also comes a week after the news that England cricket legend Graham Thorpe took his own life after suffering from severe depression.

“The idea is that we do all the work for you by collating the fantastic help that is out there. It saves you time and energy,” added Clarke.

“I often wonder whether if I’d access to these resources in the places I was going regularly, maybe I wouldn’t have found myself on the edge of that cliff at Barry Island.”

Dragons RFC Community manager Mike Sage has sited the Speakeasy Bench at the heart of the club’s fan zone at Rodney Parade.“Our growing ‘Family of Provisions’ encompass Sport, Education, Inclusion, Community Outreach and Health and Wellbeing to drive change and positive outcomes. The work Speakeasy Club are doing to complement these areas in partnership with us makes complete sense,” said Sage.

“We pride ourselves on being committed to inclusive rugby opportunities, and that extends to the wellbeing of all involved with our community programme and the Dragons RFC, both on and off the pitch.’’

6 NATIONS EVENING WITH SHANE WILLIAMS & LEE BYRNE, HOSTED BY BARRY RFC

Blog/ News

Well well, @barry.rfc you were exceptional.

Another wonderfully brilliant 6 nations charity night last Saturday with @byrney15 & @Shanewilliams
Thanks to the 80 people who joined us and thanks to your generosity we raised just over £800 in support of Barry RFC.

A few takeaways from me:
‘’ I didn’t prepare for life after rugby, the first few years were a bit of a fog – it’s a short career as a rugby player and people forget that’’ @byrney15
‘’ Lockdown was hard being isolated away from everyone, rugby you’re with the boys all the time…you work with people you trust and I trust these boys’’ @shanewilliams
‘’ I Scored 5 tries in my first game and thought, this is easier than football!’’

A credit to themselves and rugby in Wales.
Thanks to Lee for bringing his 2009 @britishlions jersey against the Royal XI and to Shane for bringing his last Ospreys jersey in the Pro12 final vs Leinster in 2012.

Big thanks to the committee; Chairman John, Colin, Chugga, Big Tom, John Anthony and of course DJ Craig.
A special experience and looking forward to being back soon.
Like yesterday’s post, today could be a potentially defining day in the history of Welsh Rugby. Support the players for all the memories they give us off the pitch, so they can enjoy their memories off the pitch.
There are plenty more conversations in the pipeline and we love you to join us.
